About Mr. McGehee

I grew up in the small town of Durant, Oklahoma and went to college at the University of North Texas in Denton, TX.  While at UNT, I received two bachelor's degrees: one in Radio, TV & Film Studies and one in History.  After moving to Bellingham in 2006, I attended Western Washington University in order to get my teaching certification.  I taught History and technology classes at high schools in Bellingham from spring 2010 to June 2012.  In the fall of 2012, I was happy to find what I consider to be a dream job here at MMS teaching digital art classes.  I enjoy the thrill of teaching classes that always change with the latest techniques and technology.

Aside from education, I have over 10 years of experience in graphic design, photography and the digital printing industry.  Living in Mount Vernon with my family, I enjoy cooking; looking for new music to listen to; listening to news podcasts and reading technology and design blogs.

Rundown: Week Ending 1/16/15

2nd period Design Team

This was a pretty big week for 2nd period Design. We kicked off the week with a 1-day design challenge that asked students to design a logo for a new athletic shoe company.  While the work was quick, some of the results really showed off that these students know how to design for a particular audience.

Students also progressed in their chocolate bar designs. A few even made it to the prototyping phase and began wrapping bars. Tweaks and changes followed, leading to some really great results!

We finished the week by working on our airline project.  This week, our teams met with our client teams in Mr. Schmitt's Applied Math class to go over what their airline companies want to see in a look for the paint designs of their jets. Our teams will design a logo and entire exterior paint job of the plane and mock up a final design.

5th and 6th period Graphic Design

5th and 6th period classes put their single color photo collages to use by creating full color wheels from the individual color files. The results are awesome!

Rundown: Week Ending 12/5/14

2nd period Design Team

This week, we continued working on making sure our portfolio blogs are up to date. Our work with principles of design focused more on balance in design. Students made animated GIF balance maps of asymmetrical and symmetrical photos and design to post to their blogs. We finished the week with a 30 minutes design challenge that asked students to consider BALANCE, EMPHASIS and typography.

5th and 6th period Graphic Design

This week, we studied LINE as an element of art. Specifically, the 5 types of lines and the idea of implied line (lines created by other lines or other elements of art). Additionally, we discused negative and positive space.  To demonstrate learning, students used various lines and a color scheme of their choice to fill the negative space of their artwork with color zentangles.  The remaining white space becomes positive space when the viewer reads the student's name or nickname.

Rundown: Week Ending 11/14/14

2nd period Design Team

This week, we explored the design principle of pattern in design and art.  To illustrate, we created repeating patterns using only 1 image. The representational square in the pattern is the image placed so it's recognizable to the viewer.  The second set of squares are abstract, made from distorting the original image.

Students have been posting this year to their own online portfolio blogs.  Please take a look at the doccument below to see your student's work so far this year!

5th & 6th Period Graphic Design

Most of this week was spent with students creating a list of student norms that will hang in our room and guide student behavior in our class.  Those norms can be found in the syllabus documents students took home to have reviewed and signed by families.  See the student norms in the syllabus here for 5TH PERIOD and here for 6TH PERIOD.

Rundown: Week Ending 11/7/14

5th and 6th period Graphic Design classes shifted this week with the end of the quarter.  Quarter 1's 5th and 6th period classes spent the week finishing any lingering assignments.

2nd period Design Team

This week, we studied the design principle CONTRAST.  Specifically, using blur to create contrast and direct the viewer's eye.  Also, we explored mixing ABSTRACT and REPRESENTATIONAL IMAGES.  Students did several activities relating to these concepts and blogged about them.

2nd period students also got a chance to make some digital art by mixing ABSTRACT and REPRESENTATIONAL images.  This lead to some VERY interesting results!
